James and Sarah NourseJAMES NOURSE was born 19 July 1731 at Weston-under-Penyard, Herefordshire, England; and died 10 October 1784 at Annapolis, Maryland. He immigrated to America with his family in 1769, where he settled near Charlestown, West Virginia, on a plantation called "Piedmont;" was in the Virginia Legislature, representing Jefferson and Berkeley Counties (now West Virginia), and held other state and government offices; was one of the thirteen trustees of Berkeley Springs when Bath, Morgan County, was laid out, which claimed to be the first town laid out after the Declaration of Independence, October, 1776. He was appointed Commissioner to settle the claims of Maryland against the United States about 1781, and removed to Annapolis for that purpose. James Nourse married 30 September 1753 to Sarah Fouace, daughter of Gabriel Fouace, a woolen draper of London, and Sarah Burton his wife.

To the union of James & Sarah Nourse were born a total of twenty-one children. Those that survived to adulthood settled in America. The annals of James Nourse and his American descendants have been faithfully recorded by Maria Catharine Nourse Lyle in her book, James Nourse and His Descendants, published in 1897.
